The Reds secured vital three points in a hard fought encounter against Wigan Athletic on Wednesday to climb to sixth in the league table. However with both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur winning their games in the midweek, Liverpool are still five points away from the fourth place and will have to collect points on a consistent basis if they are to close the gap.

Goals from David Ngog and Fernando Torres had given Liverpool a comfortable 2-0 lead but Wigan threatened to stage a comeback late in the game. Though the visitors managed to reduce the deficit through Charles N’Zogbia, Liverpool hung on to claim vital three points from the game and provide some relief to manager Rafa Benitez. While Javier Mascherano is fit and available for selection, there is some doubt regarding Glen Johnson’s fitness and the right back could sit out the game on Saturday. Albert Riera continues to remain sidelined with a hamstring injury while new signing Alberto Aquilani is expected to start the game on the bench with Benitez expected to stick with Mascherano and Steven Gerrard in the midfield.

Meanwhile Portsmouth boss Avram Grant will be hoping that his side can build on their good display against Chelsea from the midweek. Pompey came very close to snatching a point at Stamford Bridge only for Frank Lampard to score the winner with just 10 minutes remaining on the clock.
