Pompey have had a disastrous start to the season and find themselves at the foot of the Premier League table with half of the season gone. While Portsmouth put up an excellent performance to beat Liverpool a fortnight ago, a disappointing defeat in one of their most important games of the season against West Ham means that the club is still four points away from safety.

The last season’s defending champions were knocked out of the competition after suffering a shock defeat to Championship side Swansea City. While manager Avram Grant has made it clear that he would want no distractions as he tries to lift Pompey out of the drop zone, the Israeli coach will be looking to secure a victory over Coventry with his side not playing until next weekend. David James is the only serious doubt for Pompey but with Asmir Begovic impressing in the goal, Grant will be confident that his side can secure the required result and progress to the next round.

Meanwhile Coventry City will be looking to maintain their recent good form and upset the odds by progressing to the next round at the expense of a Premier League side. The Sky Blues have won three of their last four games though they still are uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.

Both the sides have met twice in the FA Cup before this fixture with Coventry winning both the games. However Portsmouth hold a slight advantage in the recent meetings, winning two of the last three games including a 4-0 win during the 2002-03 season.
