A recent return to form had seen Pompey collect seven points from three games but the club has now lost their last three matches and find themselves six points clear of safety at the foot of the table. Manager Avram Grant will be aware that his side will have to beat Burnley this weekend with both the clubs expected to finish nearly the lower end of the league table. Grant has started his Pompey career with two defeats, losing 4-1 to Manchester United last weekend before conceding another four goals in their 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa in their Carling Cup clash on Tuesday.

Grant, who made a number of changes to the squad that had played against United, admitted that league survival is his priority right now and will be looking to make some more changes for the game against Burnley this weekend. Pompey will be keen to maintain their recent superiority over Burnley having won the last three matches between the two sides.

However Owen Coyle’s side start the game as clear favorites to secure their first win over Portsmouth in more than 25 years. Burnley are off to a good start the season and find themselves 12th in the league table with 17 points from 14 games. Burnley will be without Jay Rodriguez, Martin Paterson and Chris McCann who are out of action for at least another two weeks.
