Portsmouth have scored a total of eleven goals in three League Cup games so far. They beat League Two side Hereford United 4-1 at home in August, and then followed it up with a 3-1 win away at Carlisle United. Stoke City were their opponents in the round of 16, and Pompey crushed the Potters 4-0 at Fratton Park.

French striker Frederic Piquionne is Pompey’s top scorer in the Carling Cup with three goals. This game is new manager Avram Grant’s second in charge of the South Coast club. His side were trounced 4-1 by Manchester United on Saturday in the league. Pompey paid the price for not taking full advantage of their first half opportunities and crumbled after United scored their second and third within minutes of each other. Pompey’s only goal came from the spot via Kevin Prince Boateng.

Villa needed penalties to beat Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in the fourth round. The Midlands outfit had keeper Brad Guzan to thank for a stellar performance in goal. The American saved a penalty from Kenwyne Jones in normal time, and then denied Lorik Cana, Jordan Henderson and Andy Reid in the shootout as Villa triumphed 3-1 on penalties. James Collins, John Carew and Ashley Young converted their attempts from 12 yards out for Villa.

Villa drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday. They took the lead through Gabriel Agbonlahor, but were unable to protect it as Spurs equalised late in the game through skipper Michael Dawson.
