Path to Wembley

Both teams had a relatively tough path to Wembley stadium. However critics may contend that Cardiff have had it easier. Given below are the games that each team played and won to get to the title tilt.

Portsmouth

Pompey started off with a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town at the start of this year. Based on that performance few would have wagered that the south-coast team would be knocking on the doors of Wembley in mid-May.

In the fourth round manager Harry Redknapp managed to outwit Plymouth Argyle 2-1 despite the visitors taking a 4th minute lead thanks to Clarke. Goals from Nico Kranjcar and Lassana Diarra guided Portsmouth into the fifth round.

Here Pompey were very lucky against Preston North End as a late own goal from Carter propelled them into the quarterfinals where even their supporters began dreaming of Wembley glory. At Old Trafford, Portsmouth took a 77th minute lead through a Sulley Muntari penalty and managed to hang on to throw last year's finalists Manchester United out of the Cup. Portsmouth were drawn to meet Championship team West Brom in the semi-finals. At Wembley, it was a lackluster match by all counts until the 53rd minute when Kanu turned the tide Pompey's way.

The Welsh side started off with a 3-1 win over Chasetown thanks to goals from Whittingham, Ramsey and Parry, which nullified an own goal from McNaughton.

In the fourth round goals from McNaughton and Thompson nullified Robinson's effort to give Cardiff a 1-2 win over Hereford United. In the next round Cardiff overcame Wolverhampton Wolves 2-0 at home with Whittingham and Hasselbaink sealing the win. Whittingham was on target again against Middlesbrough in the quarterfinals as a goal from him and one from Johnson allowed Cardiff to enter the semifinals. Joe Ledley's goal at the Wembley was enough to halt giant killers Barnsley and send Cardiff fans into raptures at the prospect of seeing their team clinch the FA Cup for the first time since 1927.

Players to watch out for

Jermain Defoe is cup-tied so it will be interesting to see where Redknapp turns for this crucial game. In all probability Nigerian striker Kanu will be paired with Czech maestro Milan Baros. David Nugent has been pressing for a place and it may be no surprise to see him on the bench for this one.

Sulley Muntari, Niko Kranjcar and Lassana Diarra all have vital roles to play as they will look to keep a marauding Cardiff midfield in check.

On the Bluebirds side, all eyes will be on Paul Parry and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. It will be interesting to see if Dave Jones brings Robbie Fowler into the picture at some stage of the game as well.

In Joe Ledley, Stephen McPhail and Gavin Rae, Cardiff probably have the best mid-field in terms of youth and experience on the pitch.

Team News

Harry Redknapp and indeed all Pompey fans heaved a sigh of relief as centre-back Sol Campbell and keeper David James returned to training. James is still doubtful with a calf injury. David Nugent has a slight groin strain, but is expected to feature.

Cardiff received a boost when it was announced that they would make it to the UEFA Cup should they lift the FA Cup. With Fowler recovered and fit from hip surgery, boss Jones has no major injury concerns ahead of the big match.
