Fabregas started the game against Aston Villa on the bench but with the Gunners failing to break through a stubborn Villa defense, manager Arsene Wenger was forced to send his most creative player on to the field. Wenger was optimistic that the midfielder will be out of action for only a short period of time but admitted that Fabregas could be out of action for another three weeks if he had once again pulled the hamstring. The Arsenal manager was however delighted by his captain’s impact. With Chelsea dropping two points over the weekend and facing a tough test against Fulham on Monday, Wenger will be confident that his side can further close down the gap at the top of the table.

They take on a Portsmouth side that suffered a disappointing defeat to fellow relegation strugglers West Ham on Saturday. Pompey had a golden chance to lift themselves up from the bottom of the table but goals from Alessandro Diamanti and Radoslav Kovac meant that the club is now four points away from safety with half of the season gone.

David James could return to the starting lineup after training with the first team however his future with the club is in doubt after welcome reports that former manager Harry Redknapp was interested in signing him during the January transfer window.
