Atletico Madrid face an uphill task to save their European campaign when they travel to Portugal in the second leg of their Champions League knockout stage clash against Porto on Wednesday. Atletico failed to capitalize on their home advantage in the first leg as Porto twice came from a goal down to end the game with a 2-2 draw. Atletico looked on course for a comfortable victory when Maxi Rodriguez put them in an early lead by the 3rd minute but Lisandro Lopez equalized midway through the first half.

Diego Forlan restored Atletico's lead on the stroke of half time but Lopez struck once again in the 72nd minute to help Porto come away with a result that coach Jesualdo Ferreira will be delighted with.

 

 

However Porto will have to be wary of complacency having already got knocked out of the competition at this stage in the last two seasons even though they had managed to avoid defeat in the first leg. A 2-1 defeat away to Chelsea ended their hopes of an upset during the 2006-07 season after holding the Blues to a draw in Portugal while last season Schalke managed to progress over Porto after beating them 4-1 in the penalty shootout with both the legs ending in a 1-1 stalemate.

Atletico go into their match against Porto on the back of an excellent performance against arch rivals Real Madrid in the domestic league, coming away from the Santiago Bernabeu with a credible 1-1 draw on Saturday.
