Porto qualified from the Group of Death- Group D, which also included defending champions Olympique Lyonnais and Turkish side Besiktas. Jesualdo Ferreira's' men stunned Lyon 2-0 in their opening game, and then managed to avoid defeat against Besiktas to book their spot in the last four.

Porto drew 0-0 with Besiktas in their final group game. Porto's best chances in the game fell to Alvaro Pereira and Raul Meireles, but neither could make their chances count. Aston Villa, who had been thrown a lifeline by Atlante, took it with both hands and progressed to the semifinals with a fluent 3-1 win over the Mexican side. An own goal from Curtis Davies gave Atlante an early lead, but Villa equalised twenty minutes later through Marc Albrighton.

Norwegian international John Carew put Villa ahead shortly after the interval and Ashley Young added a third on 62 minutes to give Martin O'Neill's men a 3-1 victory. Aston Villa ended up on the same number of points as Malaga and Atlante, but topped the group on goal difference. The win was marred by an injury to captain Stiliyan Petrov, who fell awkwardly and injured his left shoulder.
