Poland were beaten 2-0 by the Czech Republic in Prague on Saturday. It was a must win game for the Czechs, but the result also ended Poland’s hopes of making it to South Africa next year. Tomas Necid gave the Czechs the lead in the 51^st minute with a shot that went in off the post. Arsenal playmaker Tomas Rosicky was the creator of the goal, but Piotr Polzcak and Jakub Rzezniczak made it easier for Necid as they both failed to deal with Rosicky’s pass.

Jaroslav Plasil made it 2-0 with a fine header that beat Wojciech Kowalewski at his near post. Zdenek Pospech was the creator of this goal, crossing into the box from the right. Ireneusz Jelen had two shots saved by Czech keeper Petr Cech as Ivan Hasek’s side dumped Poland out in Prague.

Group 3 leaders Slovakia were beaten 2-0 by Slovenia in Bratislava. The result cut Slovakia’s lead at the top to two points, and because Slovenia are expected to beat San Marino in their final game, nothing less than a win will do for Slovakia if they want to qualify automatically.

Auxerre forward Valter Birsa put Slovenia ahead with a wonderful long range effort in the 56^th minute. He blasted the ball into the top corner of Jan Mucha’s goal from 20 metres out. With Slovakia pouring forward for an equaliser, Slovenia hit them on the counter, and Nejc Pecnik made it 2-0 in injury time.
