Both teams have failed to qualify for next year's world cup and can now hope to get ready in time for the Euro qualifiers, which start late next year. Poland have directly qualified for that tournament as hosts, but will still seek to rebuild their team. Poland have appointed local Franciszek Smuda as coach after firing long-term boss Leo Beenhakker. Poland finished fifth above only San Marino in the group Three of the Euro round of qualifiers.

The new coach sprang a few surprises when he announced his first squad. Mariusz Lewandowski is missing from the squad, but Janusz Gancarczyk and Kamil Kosowski have been called up. Smuda has also managed to convince Sebastian Boenisch to turn out for Poland and will give the defender a maiden cap in this game.

Meanwhile Romania coach Razvan Lucescu has announced a 23-man squad for this game. Romania gave a miserable performance in the qualifiers finishing fifth above Faroe Islands in their group, which was won by Serbia.
