After picking up their first win of the season against Reading, Peterborough will be high on confidence when they host fellow Championship side Newcastle United at London Road on Tuesday. Posh produced a great second half display on Saturday as they came from two goals down to beat Reading 3-2. Craig Mackail-Smith started Posh’s revival by heading in a Paul Coutts corner, and Aaron McLean brought Posh back on level terms six minutes later. George Boyd struck the winner in injury time as Posh leapt above the Royals in the league standings.

Boyd has also scored in both of Peterborough’s Carling Cup games this season. Posh beat Wycombe Wanderers 4-0 in the first round, and then narrowly beat Ipswich Town 2-1 in the second round at home.

Newcastle were taken the distance by a battling Plymouth Argyle side on Saturday, but the Magpies showed they had the stomach for a fight as they ran out 3-1 winners. Steven Taylor put Newcastle ahead by heading in Geremi’s corner, but Karl Duguid equalised for Plymouth shortly after the interval.

Kevin Nolan helped Newcastle regain the lead again, and Andy Carroll’s stunning late strike sealed all three points for Chris Houghton’s men. Newcastle reached the third round after beating Huddersfield Town in a seven goal thriller in the second round. Danny Guthrie, Shola Amoebi, Geremi and Kevin Nolan were the scorers for the Magpies in that game.
