Paraguay were impressive in World Cup qualifying, finishing third in CONMEBOL behind Brazil and Chile.  La Albirroja won ten games in the South American qualifiers and finished a point behind Brazil. New Zealand won Oceania qualifying comfortably by winning their fourth Oceania Cup title. They finished seven points ahead of New Caledonia and won five of their six games. The prize for winning the Cup was an intercontinental playoff with Asian side Bahrain, which the All Whites won 1-0 on aggregate. Striker Rory Fallon scored the winner in front of a packed Westpac Stadium in the city of Wellington.
