Paraguay destroyed Venezuela’s chances of making it to their maiden World Cup by beating them 2-1 in Puerto Ordaz. Salvador Cabanas scored the opener ten minutes into the second half, firing past Renny Vega after Osvaldo Martinez had found the former with space on the left.

Martinez himself scored the second eleven minutes from time. It was somewhat identical to the first goal, but this time, the creator was Edgar Martinez. Nicklas Fedor had his tame penalty for Venezuela saved by Justo Villar, but Venezuela did eventually manage to pull one back through Alexander Rondon. Juan Arango crossed into the box, and Rondon controlled the ball well before beating Villar with a left footed shot.

Colombia were beaten 4-2 by Chile in Medellin. Los Cafeteros took the lead through an own goal from Arturo Vidal, but Chile hit back through goals from Waldo Ponce and Humberto Suazo. Giovanni Moreno made it 2-2 on 63 minutes, but Chile snatched victory thanks to strikes from Jorge Valdivia and Fabian Orellana. It was Colombia’s second straight loss in qualifying, following their defeat against Uruguay in Round 16.

Colombia cannot qualify for the World Cup, but they can move ahead of Venezuela in the standings if they beat Paraguay and Brazil beat Venezuela. Colombia have collected 20 points from 17 games in CONMEBOL qualifying.
