Panathinaikos start the second leg of the Champions League knockout stage clash against Villarreal as favorites to qualify to the quarter finals of the tournament for the first time in more than a decade when the two teams meet on Tuesday. The Greek side last made it to the quarter finals back in 1996 but a 1-1 draw away in Spain during the first leg has seen them take pole position to extend their European campaign to the next round.

Villarreal went into the game on the back of a 10 match unbeaten run at home in the competition but were second best throughout the match with Panathinaikos taking the lead through Giorgias Karagounis in the 59th minute. However the hosts recovered in time to equalize through Giuseppe Rossi eight minutes later to give themselves a slender chance of making it to the next round.

 

 

Panathinaikos have failed to progress to the next round just once after managing to draw their away leg. The Greek club have won eight of the nine times that they have avoided defeat in the first leg with the lone defeat coming against Ajax who won the game 3-0 after losing out the first leg in Holland 1-0 to Panathinaikos.

The last time Panathinaikos met a Spanish club during the knockout stages was back in the 2001-02 season when they lost to Barcelona 3-1 at Camp Nou after managing to stun the Catalan giants 1-0 at home.

 

 

This is just the second time that Villarreal is taking part in the tournament. Villarreal will be looking to repeat their performance in the competition from the 2005-06 season when they went all the way to the semi finals of the Champions League.
