Atletico Madrid will be hoping for a turn of fortunes on Greek soil as they take on Panathinaikos in their UEFA Champions League playoff round on Wednesday. The Spanish club has played four European games in Greece but has failed to win a single game so far. Atletico will have to put up an improved performance in the first leg if they are to have any hopes of progressing to the group stages of the competition for a second successive season.

Both Atletico and Panathinaikos have already played against each other during the group stage of the UEFA Cup back in 2007 with Atletico Madrid sneaking home a narrow 2-1 win in spite of being reduced to just 10 men.

The second leg will be played at the Vicente Calderon stadium a week later on August 25 to decide who will progress to the lucrative group stages of the Champions League.
