Panama have not had a good preparation for their Gold Cup campaign losing 2-0 to Honduras in a friendly prior to the start of this competition. Allan Lalin and Eric Norales scored in either half to set up a comfortable 2-0 win for Honduras.

Panama coach Gary Stempel admitted his team had to work on many things ahead of the tournament, but added that the Honduras game was just a friendly and not much should be read into it. Nevertheless, he will be concerned with the form of the La Marea Roja, whose biggest achievement on this stage has been an appearance in the final in the 2005 edition when they upset Colombia in the semifinals, but lost to the USA in the finals.

In 2007, the US again proved a nemesis for the Red Tide beating them 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Panama will hope for a better showing this time around and with the like veteran Ricardo Phillips and Luis Tejada in their ranks, they are definitely a team to watch out for.

Meanwhile Guadeloupe will hope to repeat their fine showing in the 2007 edition when they made it to the quarterfinals. However with the likes of Mexico and Panama in this group, the task is indeed tough.

The Gwada Boys came through to the main competition by beating Cuba on penalties in the Digicel Caribbean Championship. Manager Roger Salnot will hope his team's resilience will prove to be a strength for them in this campaign where they will once again rely on Franck Grandel and Michale Antoine-Curie to get them through.
