The Dutch side is competing with Marseille for a place in the UEFA Cup with both sides on 3 points from five games. PSV coach Huub Stevens saw his side stumble out of contention for a place in the next stage after they were beaten 1-2 by Atletico Madrid on Matchday 5.

Goals from Simão and Maxi Rodríguez gave the Los Rojiblancos a well-deserved win although Danny Koevermans pulled one back to give PSV a fighting chance of securing a draw.

 

 

PSV were humbled 0-3 on the opening Matchday and followed it up with a 1-3 loss against Liverpool. They seemed to bounce back with a 2-0 win over Marseille on Matchday 3, but lost 0-3 to the French club on the return leg. Matchday 5 saw them bow out of contention for a place in the next stage with a 1-2 loss to Atletico.

Liverpool on the other hand have already made it through to the next stage for the fifth consecutive stage, but will still want to end as group winners. The Reds have 11 points as do Atletico, who are currently top in Group D because of a better goal difference.

 

 

The Reds started this campaign with a 2-2 win over Marseille and then a 3-1 win over PSV before being held to identical 1-1 draws by Atletico. The Anfield outfit confirmed their place in the next stage with a 1-0 win over Marseille on Matchday 5 with Steven Gerrard scoring the winner. For this game, manager Rafael Benitez will be without star striker Fernando Torres who misses out with a hamstring injury.
