The Greek club will be aware that Matchday 1 at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium has not been good for them in the last few years and they will be keen to amend that this year. Olympiacos coach Temuri Ketsbaia has expertly guided his side through the qualifying stages and will hope to repeat the performance in the group stage as well.

Olympiakos qualified for the group stages on Europe's elite competition following a 3-0 aggregate victory against Moldovan club Sheriff FC in the play-offs. Dudu and substitute Kostas Mitroglou were the stars in the first leg, which was won 2-0, while Mitroglou was the lone scorer in the 1-0 win in the return leg.

Meanwhile Dutch side AZ Alkmaar are appearing in the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in their history; joining eight other clubs with similar stories this season. They appeared in the UEFA Cup in the two previous season and have an enviable record in the same. Last season they won four games and lost just two in that competition.
