Northern Ireland went to the top of Group Three of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they beat Poland 3-2 at Windsor Park on Saturday. Warren Feeney gave Northern Ireland the lead in the 10th minute only for Ireneusz Jelen to cancel it out in the 27th minute.

Jonathan Evans restored the lead in the 47th minute and a bizarre own goal from Michal Zewlakow in the 61st minute put them 3-1 up with just under 30 minutes to go. Zewlakow sent a back pass to keeper Artur Boruc and watched in horror as the ball bounced over his foot into the goal.

 

 

Marek Saganowski pulled one back for the Polish in the dying seconds of the game, but by then it was too late for the visitors. Manager Nigel Worthington will be delighted with his side's efforts and their current position in the group although they have played two games more than Slovakia who are placed second in the group.

Northern Ireland will continue to be without striker Martin Paterson, who is out with a hamstring injury. Kyle Lafferty, who was suspended for the Poland game, will miss this clash as well with an ankle injury. However George McCartney and Steve Davis are available after sitting out the Poland game with suspensions.

 

 

Meanwhile Slovenia will look to register a win and leapfrog the Czech Republic into the third place in the group. They currently have 8 points from 5 games. Slovenia drew 0-0 against the Czech Republic on Saturday to overtake Poland into the fourth spot in group.
