Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington has multiple injury concerns as his side prepare for their clash against Poland. George McCartney and Steve Davis are suspended for this clash, while striker Martin Paterson has sustained a hamstring injury that sees him miss both the Poland game as well as the one against Slovenia.
Meanwhile Kyle Lafferty is also out due to an ankle injury. The Rangers forward was due to miss the Poland clash through suspension, but the ankle injury means he misses out against Slovenia as well. Pat McCourt is out as well with a hamstring injury. Worthington has chosen to draft Andrew Little into the squad for both games. This is a maiden senior international call-up for Little. Additionally striker Jamie Ward also makes it to the squad for the first time. Northern Ireland lie second in Group Three, but they have played a game more than their rivals.
Poland are in the third spot in Group Three with the same number of points as Northern Ireland, but having played lesser number of games. A win here will give the Polish a massive boost to their campaign and will also take them to the second spot behind Slovakia.
Poland coach Leo Beenhakker has called up Ireneusz Jelen for the first time since August last year. Jelen, who plays for Auxerre, has just returned to competitive football from a broken collarbone in January. The forward has scored five goals in eight matches since his return and this has prompted Beenhakker to recall him to the national team. Jelen could start in Belfast against Northern Ireland as Paweł Brozek is out injured.
