Newcastle United hurtled to their first defeat in three games when they lost 2-1 at Craven Cottage last weekend. Andy Johnson had capitalized on a fine start at Fulham and had put them ahead early on. However Newcastle battled hard and were rewarded when Shola Ameobi helped them pull level.

But a 66th minute penalty from Danny Murphy following Fabricio Coloccini's foul on Johnson helped Fulham collect all three points at home. The goal also happened to be Murphy's 100th club career goal. Manager Joe Kinnear faces a tough task to haul his side out of danger notwithstanding the recent run of good results at the club.

 

 

Wigan Athletic are placed just above Newcastle and the relegation zone courtesy their superior goal difference. However manager Steve Bruce will be aware his side need to start battling hard to achieve results that will pull them out of danger else they might get sucked into the drop zone pretty soon.

Wigan have collected just 4 points from their last five games including an unexpected 1-2 win at Portsmouth. However the sheen of that result wore off pretty quickly as the side was held to a 0-0 draw at home by Stoke City last week.

 

 

The morale of the Latics took a further hit midweek when they lost 3-0 to a young Arsenal side in the Carling Cup. Despite having the prolific Amr Zaki in their ranks, Wigan have been unable to close out games. Last season this fixture ended in a 1-0 win for Newcastle; a result which the St James' faithful will be happy to take in one again.
