Newcastle's hopes of avoiding the drop received a major boost on Monday as they beat Middlesbrough to climb out of the drop zone. The Magpies were staring at relegation as Middlesbrough took an early lead in the 3rd minute thanks to an own goal by Habib Beye.

However Steven Taylor helped Newcastle pull level six minutes later while Obafemi Martins put his side in front late in the second half. As Boro tried to press forward in search of an equalizer, Newcastle hit them on the break through Peter Lovenkrands to secure a vital win.

While hopes are high at St James Park that Newcastle will manage to avoid the drop, manager Alan Shearer expressed caution stating that they have won just one game and there is still a lot of work to do if they are to remain outside the relegation zone come the end of the season.

Fulham too will be pushing for a victory as they chase a European place for the first time in more than five seasons. A victory for the Cottagers will all but assure them a place in the Europa League next season leaving them needing just one point from their final game to finish seventh in the league.

Fulham go into the match on the back of a thumping 3-1 win over Aston Villa last weekend thanks to a brace from Diomansy Kamara after Danny Murphy had put them in an early lead from the penalty spot.
