Interim manager Joe Kinnear has slowly improved the on pitch performances of the club since taking over last month, with the Magpies collecting five points from their last four games.

Newcastle bounced back nicely after their first defeat away to Sunderland in more than 28 years by registering a hard fought victory over West Brom on Wednesday. Joey Barton made a fairytale come back to the starting lineup by putting Newcastle in the lead from the penalty spot Obafemi Martins doubled the lead just before half time and though West Brom pulled one back, Newcastle hung on to claim all three points from the clash.

 

 

The improved form has seen Newcastle climb out of the drop zone but Kinnear will be aware that the club is out yet out of a relegation battle. Kinnear will be hoping that Aston Villa's bad form at St James Park continues with Martin O'Neill's side managing just one win in their last eight visits.

Villa will be keen to maintain their place in the top four of the league table with the club going into the clash against Newcastle on the back of a great form that has seen them win five of their last seven league matches.

 

 

A win for Villa could see them go third in the table if Arsenal fail to collect maximum points on Saturday. Villa's last victory away to Newcastle came back in 2005 when a brace from Gareth Barry propelled them to a comfortable 3-0 victory.
