New Zealand, winners of the 2008 OFC Nations Cup, are playing their third Confederations Cup. In their previous two campaigns, the All Whites have served as whipping boys for the other teams in their group, losing all their games and conceding a total of seventeen goals.

New Zealand ran Italy close in their last warm up game in Pretoria. They took the lead thrice in the game, only to surrender it on all three occasions and ended up losing 4-3. Celtic striker Chris Killen scored a brace with A-League player of the season Shane Smeltz netting the other. New Zealand will be without skipper Ryan Nelsen, who misses this tournament because of a calf injury sustained in the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers.

Spain, who are currently No.1 as per the latest FIFA World Rankings, crushed Azerbaijan 6-0 in their last friendly to extend their unbeaten run to 32 games. Valencia striker David Villa scored a hat trick, with Albert Riera, Dani Guiza and Fernando Torres also getting on the scoresheet.

La Furia Roja have a star studded lineup and are the favourites to lift the trophy. With Casillas standing between the sticks, Puyol and Ramos in defence, Xavi, Fabregas and David Silva in midfield, and Torres and Villa upfront, Spain can make good teams look very ordinary when they are on song. Barcelona playmaker Andres Iniesta and Villareal skipper Marcos Senna are not in the squad because of injury.
