New Zealand will hope home support will spur them on to grab a vital win and ensure their ticket to South Africa 2010 when they play Bahrain this weekend. The All Whites played splendidly to hold Bahrain to a 0-0 draw in their Asia/Oceania World Cup qualifier playoff first leg last month. New Zealand were lucky to come away with a draw from the Bahrain National Stadium as the home side squandered multiple scoring chances.
Jaycee John, Salman Isa and Husain Ali all had several opportunities to put the game beyond the Kiwis, but either fluffed them or were denied by brilliant saves from New Zealand goalkeeper Mark Paston. New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert was delighted with his side's display, which was led in an excellent manner by skipper Ryan Nelsen. He hoped they would be able to do the needful in the second leg at home. Meanwhile Bahrain coach Milan Macala admitted that his side's task of securing their first ever FIFA World Cup appearance was made tougher by their draw at home. However he still expressed confidence of making it through when the side clash in the second leg.
Macala's task is made harder by the fact that star striker Alaa Hubail misses out this game after tearing cruciate ligaments in his right knee. The away goal rule though could help Bahrain as they only need to score once, which means New Zealand will have to score twice to overcome their challenge.
