Motherwell embark on their first European adventure in well over a decade- 13 years to be precise, and they have Mark McGhee to thank for it. McGhee guided the Fir Park outfit to a third place in the Scottish Premier League last season, and a place in this year’s UEFA Cup is the reward for that performance. McGhee has transformed the outfit into an attacking one which plays the passing game well, instead of the physical, long ball approach that you would have come to expect. A bit weird as it might sound, but while we will see Motherwell in Europe this season, we won’t see Rangers. Motherwell suffered a 2-4 defeat at the hands of Celtic at the weekend. Giorgios Samaras grabbed two, while Shaun Maloney and Scott McDonald scored one apiece as Celtic raced to a 4-0 lead, but Motherwell grabbed two consolation goals through John Sutton and David Clarkson in the second half.
Nancy finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, just two points behind Marseille. They participated in the 2006-07 UEFA Cup, and reached the round of 32 before losing to Ukranian side Shakhtar. They had qualified from a group that included Blackburn, Wisla and Feyernoord. In their weekend league game, they drew 1-1 with Auxerre, thanks to Moncef Zerka’s 68th minute equalizer, after Kevin Lejeune had given Auxerre the lead. Nancy are currently 13th in Ligue 1, with six points from five games, including three draws. They have not lost at home in the league, winning one and drawing two.
