Nacional finished fourth in the Portuguese Liga last season with 52 points from 30 games. It was enough for them to land a spot in Europe. However the Madeiran side have lost key striker Nene, who was the top scorer in Portugal last season with twenty goals, to Italian Serie A outfit Cagliari.

Nacional also sold young defender Maicon to FC Porto. They have signed Filipe da Costa from Levski Sofia and have also snapped up young Brazilian defender Jairo from Fluminense. Nacional played Sporting CP in their opening match of the 2009-10 season and drew the game 1-1. Midfielder Joao Aurelio gave Nacional the lead in the first half, but then scored an unfortunate second half own goal to give Sporting a share of the spoils.

Zenit St Petersburg finished fifth in the Russian Premier League last season. The 2007 Russian champions also had a disappointing start to the 2009 season and sacked coach Dick Advocaat recently. Anatoli Davydov has been appointed as caretaker manager as Zenit continue to look for a successor to Advocaat.

Zenit are currently 10 points behind leaders Rubin Kazan in the Russian league. Their most recent game was a hard fought 4-2 win over Amkar Perm. Igor Semshov scored twice for Zenit, while Szabolcs Huszti and Nicolas Lombaerts also found the back of the net.
