After losing the first leg 1-0 in Vlore, Motherwell need a win to keep their European hopes alive when they meet Albanian Superliga side Flamurtari in the second leg of their Europa League second round qualifier at the Excelsior Stadium on Thursday. ![]() Jim Gannon's men thought they had taken the lead in Vlore when striker John Sutton scored from the spot after being fouled by Bledion Guga. However referee Fritz Stuchlik asked Sutton to take the penalty again because one of the Flamurtari players had encroached into the 18 yard box. Unfortunately for Sutton and Well, his second attempt was stopped by Flamurtari keeper Shpetim Mocka. ![]() In the first qualifying round, Motherwell lost the first leg 1-0 to Llanelli, but the Lanarkshire side scored thrice in Wales in the second leg to progress 4-2 on aggregate. Well were the better side in the first leg in Vlore, and will fancy their chances at home. Flamurtari, playing in European competition for the first time in 1996, had Emir Strati to thank for the winner in Vlore last week. The goal came shortly after the hour mark, and gave the Albanian side a 1-0 lead to take into the second leg in Scotland. Elhan Galica came close to doubling Flamurtari's lead towards the end as Motherwell left gaps at the back in search of an equaliser, but Well keeper Michael Fraser was up to the task. ![]() Flamurtari's best performance in the erstwhile UEFA Cup saw them reach the third round in the 1986-87 season. They beat Partizan Belgrade and Wismut Aue before falling to mighty Barcelona in the third round of the competition.
