A forgettable afternoon last weekend saw Boro slip to a 3-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers. Gareth Southgate's side were completely outplayed by Bolton who took a 2-0 lead by the 10th minute thanks to goals from Kevin Davies and Matthew Taylor. Emanuel Pogatetz scored in the 77th minute to spark hopes of a Boro come back late in the game but Johan Elmander restored Bolton's two goal advantage to inflict Boro's first defeat in six matches.

The defeat leaves Middlesbrough just inside the top half of the league table and fans will be hoping for a positive response against Newcastle United as they look to avoid a second straight derby defeat following their 2-0 defeat away to Sunderland early this season.

 

 

Newcastle United go into the game following the announcement that Joe Kinnear has been given an extension of another month to his contract. With The Magpies playing steadily since the arrival of Kinnear, there had been calls for a longer contract to be given to the former Nottingham Forest manager.

However with reports that it will be difficult to find a new owner until February, Mike Ashley has decided to extend Kinnear's contract by just one month.

 

 

Newcastle go into their match against Middlesbrough on the back of a brilliant defensive performance against Chelsea which saw them come away from Stamford Bridge with a point. Chelsea completely dominated the possession but the Newcastle defense limited the chances and on rare occasions that the Blues managed to breach the opposition defense, keeper Shay Given was at hand to pull off some great saves to keep the clean sheet.
