Boro will be hoping to progress beyond the quarterfinals spot that they managed to achieve in the FA Cup last season. The Riverside club were battered after a tiring campaign to stay alive in the Premier League and went down 0-2 to Cardiff City with Johnson and Whittingham scoring the winning goals.

 

 

Manager Gareth Southgate will hope that the club are able to put behind their Premier League form and get on with the business at hand in the cup competitions. Boro will be delighted with the fact that defender Matthew Bates has returned to first-team action for the first time since October 2006 after recovering from a series of knee injuries.

Southgate is also having to contend with a lot of clubs making a move for winger Stewart Downing in the January transfer window.

 

 

Barrow meanwhile are in a spot of trouble themselves in the Conference sitting just above the relegation zone. Barrow co-manager Dave Bayliss and co-boss Darren Sheridan may be tempted to take the field on Saturday, but the former has ruled it out. Barrow progressed through by beating Brentford 2-1 with goals from Henry and Brown, while Brentford scored through McDonald. Last season Barrow had held Bournemouth in the first round, but lost the replay 3-2.
