Middlesbrough could find themselves relegated to the Championship this weekend if they fail to beat Aston Villa when the two teams clash on Saturday. A disappointing defeat to Newcastle United has left Middlesbrough three points adrift from safety with just two games remaining. With Boro's goal difference inferior to other relegation strugglers, manager Gareth Southgate will be aware that his side will have to win both their remaining games and hope that Newcastle and Hull City slip up if they are to pull themselves out of the drop zone.

Boro looked on course for a vital victory on Monday as an own goal by Habib Beye put them in an early lead. However Newcastle equalized six minutes later through Steven Taylor before goals from Obafemi Martins and Peter Lovenkrands ensured that it was Newcastle and not Middlesbrough who have an excellent chance of avoiding the drop.

Aston Villa on the other hand have imploded in the final third of the season and have managed just seven points from their last 10 matches. While the club is assured a place in the Europa League next season, manager Martin O'Neill will be disappointed with the recent performances from his players that has cost them a place in the Champions League.

Villa suffered their 10th defeat of the season as they were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Fulham. Danny Murphy opened the scoring in the 6th minute from the penalty spot and though Ashley Young equalized in the 14th minute, a second half brace by Diomansy Kamara helped Fulham tighten their grip on the seventh place.
