Boro slipped into the danger zone following their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday. A brace from Salomon Kalou sent the Blues into the second spot and consigned the Teessiders to the 18th spot with 21 points from 23 games.

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has admitted he has spent sleepless nights in trying to figure out a way to ensure the Premiership survival of the Riverside outfit. Things have not been helped by the departure of Egyptian striker Mido to Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window. The arrival of Marlon King from Hull promises to be a solid move, but at the moment the main concern for Southgate and indeed Boro fans is survival.

 

 

Blackburn have moved out of the relegation zone and have churned out decent results ever since Sam Allardyce arrived at Ewood Park. The Rovers managed to hold Bolton to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday thanks to a late equalizer from South African striker Benni McCarthy.

Matthew Taylor and Kevin Davies had put Bolton ahead before the break, but Stephen Warnock pulled one back just after the half-time break to keep Rivers in the hunt. McCarthy missed a penalty before making amends late on to rescue a point for his side. The draw keeps Blackburn just above the relegation zone with 22 points from 22 games.

 

 

Allardyce is reported to be close to signing Zenit St Petersburg striker Pavel Pogrebnyak, which means Roque Santa Cruz will be allowed to move to Man City. Last season this fixture ended in a 2-1 win for Blackburn, but the reverse fixture this season finished in a 1-1 draw.
