Mexico will be looking to avoid the danger of needing a win in their final group match and progress to the next round with a comfortable victory over Panama in their second CONCACAF Gold Cup clash on Thursday. Needing to win their opening match after a disappointing World Cup qualification campaign so far, Mexico took the lead from a disputed penalty through Luis Noriega on the stroke of half time. Referee Paul Ward awarded the penalty for Mexico after Armando Reyes looked to have tackled Israel Martinez inside the area though the 28-year old took full advantage of the challenge. Pablo Barrera then put the result beyond doubt by doubling the lead with just four minutes remaining on the clock.

However the win came at some cost though with Carlos Vela limping off the field due to a leg injury. The Arsenal striker came out worse from a hard tackle and was substituted in the 10th minute.

Panama on the other hand started their Gold Cup campaign in the worst possible fashion with the Central American champions losing out to minnows Guadeloupe. Panama was expected to secure an easy victory against the eastern Caribbean nation but it was Guadeloupe who took the lead in the 33rd minute through Loic Loval.

David Fleurival doubled the lead two minutes before half time and though Panama managed to reduce the deficit through Nelson Barahona in the second half, Guadeloupe held on to their lead to secure a vital win.

Panama will have to beat Mexico on Thursday if they are to have any hopes of making it to the next round and though El Tri are struggling for form, they should manage to collect at least a point from their game against Panama.
