Despite the absence of their manager Javier Aguirre, Mexico managed to beat Guadeloupe 2-0 thanks to goals from Gerardo Torrado and Miguel Sabah. Aguirre has been suspended for three games after a bust-up with a Panama player and watched from the stands as goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made a wonderful save to keep his side in the game. Mexico topped Group C with seven points from three games and will hope to advance to the semifinals. El Tri will hope that a good showing in this competition will assuage fans, who are down and out after their miserable showing in the World Cup qualifying campaign so far.
Meanwhile Haiti qualified for this stage despite finishing third in Group B behind the United States and Honduras. Haiti finished with 4 points from three games. Haiti drew 2-2 against the United States in their final game thanks to goals from Virin and Chery. This was after Davy Arnaud opened the scoring for the United State. Just when it looked like Haiti would win the game, Stuart Holden scored in stoppage time to snatch a point for the US. Haiti coach Jairo Rios will hope his team shows the same level of commitment in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
