Lyon’s long reign as champions of France could be over when they take on Marseille in this weekend’s most important Ligue 1 clash at the Stade Velodrome. Marseille currently lead the table on goal difference from Bordeaux. A win for Bordeaux on Saturday would mean that Marseille need a win to keep pace with Laurent Blanc’s side. Bordeaux winning on Saturday would also mean that Lyon will officially be dethroned as French champions.

Marseille beat Nice 2-0 in the Mediterranean derby on Wednesday night. Strikes in either half from Mamadou Niang and Brazilian Brandao gave OM their fifth win in six games. Eric Gerets’ side are looking for their first league title in nearly two decades- their last win was back in 1992.

Lyon kept their slim title hopes alive as they beat struggling Nantes 3-0 on Tuesday night. Cameroonian midfielder Jean Makoun struck a brace in the first half, and defender Anthony Mounier scored the third in the second half as Les Gones pushed the Canaries closer to relegation.

Winger Sidney Govou is expected to be fit to face Marseille. Lyon will also have one eye on fourth placed PSG, who are threatening to take away their spot in the lucrative Champions League next season. The most recent fixture between Lyon and Marseille took place in the Coupe de France in January. Lyon won 1-0 thanks to Karim Benzema’s early strike.
