Erik Gerets' men started off badly losing 1-2 to Liverpool. On the second Matchday they lost to Atletico Madrid by the same margin. Marseille's hopes of making it to the next stage vanished on Matchday 3 when they succumbed 0-2 to PSV.

However the French side bounced back in contention for a place in the UEFA Cup when they beat PSV 3-0 on Matchday 4. Two goals from Mamadou Niang and another from Kone gave Marseille a much needed win. However they went out of the competition on Matchday 5 when Liverpool beat them 1-0 courtesy a goal from Steven Gerrard.

Marseille are currently third in Group D and can make it to the UEFA Cup should they maintain the same position.

Atletico Madrid have already qualified for the next stage, but their aim will be to take the top spot in Group D. The Madrid side trounced PSV 3-0 in their first game and then beat Marseille 2-1 before being held to a 1-1 draw by Liverpool on Matchday 3 and Matchday 4.

Javier Aguirre's side confirmed their place in the next stages with a 2-1 win over PSV thanks to goals from Simao and Maxi Rodriguez. Although Danny Koevermans pulled one back for PSV, the result was never in doubt. One incident of note for this game is that Atletico have decided not to use any of their five per cent allocation of tickets for the match after security incidents took place in their clash at Madrid.
