Marseille and Milan were the first sides to make it to the final of the newly constituted European league in the 1992-93 season. It is indeed a surprise that the sides have not met more often at any stage in the competition since then. The only other fixture they contested was the quarter-final of the competition in the 1995 season.

Marseille will be hoping to progress beyond the group stage this season having failed to qualify last time around. Marseille coach Didier Deschamps will hope they fare better in their Matchday 1 fixture this time having lost 2-1 to Liverpool last season.

Meanwhile AC Milan are back in Europe's elite club competition after missing out last season. New boss Leonardo has plenty of problems in the midfield following the sale of Kaka to Real Madrid in the summer.

However he will be hoping that his side's more experienced stars like Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattusso will guide the younger lot including Alexandre Pato in this competition. Milan will be hard pressed to qualify from a group that also includes Real Madrid and Zurich.
