Marseille play Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg for a place ion the quarterfinals of live UEFA Cup at the Velodrome this Thursday having comfortably cruised through their round of 32 clash with another Russian team Spartak Moscow.

Marseille won their round of 32 game by an aggregate score of 2-3 after beating Spartak 3-0 at home in the first leg. Goals from Benoit Cheyrou, Taye Taiwo and Mamadou Niang put Marseille on the road to a place in live UEFA Cup round of 16.

However the French side had a scare in the second leg at Moscow where Spartak finished strongly winning 2-0. Goals from Aleksandr Pavlenko and Roman Pavlyuchenko allowed Spartak to give a late challenge to Marseille, but they were unable to get the elusive third goal allowing the French side to squeak through.

Meanwhile Zenit St Petersburg squeaked into the round of 16 thanks to their better away goal record. Zenit were playing Spanish side Villarreal in their round of 32 clash and won on an aggregate score of 2-2 after having won the first leg 1-0 at home. Pavel Pogrebnyak's goal had given Zenit a narrow advantage going into the second leg at Villarreal.

Zenit St. Petersburg were able to take a lead through Pavel Pogrebnyak at the El Madrigal, but Villarreal came back through Guille Franco and Jon Dahl Tomasson, but not before Roman Shirokov and Radek Sirl were dismissed.

Zenit coach Dick Advocat has been banned for three matches from the touchline for his behavior during this game.
