Both the sides met in the European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals in 1990-91 with Marseille going to the finals after winning with an aggregate of 5-2. Spartak Moscow start the knockout round as underdogs with the Russian club managing to win just one of their 17 games against French teams and losing 12. Spartak have failed to win a single match on the French soil with nine attempts leading to 8 defeats and one draw.

Meanwhile Marseille will be looking to put behind the disappointment of being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and progress to the next round with convincing victories in both the legs. The French side needed to draw their final match against Liverpool but were thrashed 4-0 which meant that Marseille finished the group stage in third position.

The French side has got a good record against Russian opponents, winning four of their seven matches so far. Of the three games played at home, Marseille have won two and lost won.

The winners of the tie will face either FC Zenit St. Petersburg or Villarreal CF in the next round on March 6 with the first leg to be played at home.
