Bruce has never won against his former club though he has attempted to secure a win with three different clubs. He managed just two draws in eight attempts with Birmingham City while United secured comfortable victory over Wigan Athletic in the two seasons that he was the manager of the club. With Sunderland playing well in the league, Saturday's match presents Steve Bruce with his best chance of getting one over his former manager. The Black Cats go into the match on the back of a thumping 5-2 win over Wolves in their last game.

Goals from Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones had given Sunderland a 2-0 lead three minutes into the second half. However Wolves fought back to first reduce the deficit through an own goal by John Mensah before Kevin Doyle equalized in the 55th minute. However the game was not over as Jones grabbed his second goal of the match before Michael Turner and an own goal by Michael Mancienne helped Sunderland cruise to a comfortable victory.

Sunderland will be hoping to improve on their last season's results against the defending champions after losing both the matches against Manchester United including a 1-0 loss at Old Trafford with Nemanja Vidic scoring the winner in injury time. Vidic is expected to start against Sunderland this weekend along with Rio Ferdinand though Michael Owen is out of action after suffering a groin injury in United's match against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

With Chelsea and Liverpool playing each other on Sunday and with Arsenal facing a tough game against Blackburn Rovers, United manager Alex Ferguson will be keen to heap more pressure on his title rivals by moving three points clear at the top of the league table.

Five wins from their last five games has seen United dispel any suspicions of their ability to mount a successful title defense. While the defending champions are yet to hit top gera, they have been securing the required results and will be keen to maintain their form against Sunderland on Saturday.
