Manchester United were expected to beat an injury hit Arsenal side on Saturday, but instead ended up slumping to a 2-1 defeat. United's only goal of the game was from fullback Rafael, and that too at the very end. United did create more chances, but were guilty of not converting, with both Rooney and Ronaldo coming close. In their third round League Cup game, United beat Middlesbrough, who had Emmanuel Pogatetz sent off, 3-1 with goals from Ronaldo, Nani and Ryan Giggs. In that fixture, Ferguson gave youngsters such as Ben Amos and Danny Welbeck a start, and he may do the same against QPR.

Queens Park Rangers beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the previous round, with Damion Stewart's second half header proving to be the difference between the two sides. However Iain Dowie has left the club, and player manager Gareth Ainsworth is currently in charge of the Hoops. In their weekend Championship fixture, QPR beat Cardiff City 1-0, with substitute Gavin Mahon scoring the winner in the 80th minute. Rangers ended the game with a two man advantage on the pitch, with Cardiff players Darren Purse and Miguel Comminges getting the marching orders from the referee. Mikele Leigertwood misses this game as he serves the third of his four match ban for a horrendous challenge on Lee Carsley in QPR's league win over Birmingham City.
