Carlos Tevez was the hero for the Red Devils at the Britannia Stadium on Boxing Day as the defending champions struggled to beat 10-man Stoke. However manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be disappointed at losing Rio Ferdinand for 10 days after the England skipper injured his back in the warm-up before that game.
It is expected that Ferguson will replace Ferdinand with John O'Shea. Patrice Evra continues to serve a four-match ban for the second game running. However the main interest will be focused on the strike partner for Wayne Rooney with Tevez in the running after having scored the winner at Stoke.
Manchester United are currently third in the league table with 35 points from 17 games.
Meanwhile Middlesbrough have slipped close to the drop zone following their 1-0 Boxi9ng Day loss to Everton. Tim Cahill was the star once again for the Toffees scoring the winner, which took Boro to the 18th spot on the league table with 20 points from 19 games.
Manager Gareth Southgate insists he is happy with the form of his side, but fans are worried Boro may slip into the drop zone in the New Year. Middlesbrough have not registered a win in over seven games this trend is surely worrisome for Southgate. The defense is also weak what with the absence of Justin Hoyte telling heavily on the club. Southgate may need to bring some reinforcements in January otherwise his club may get entangled in a fight to avoid the trap door. Last season this fixture was clinched 4-1 by Manchester United.
