Manchester United had an early exit in the League Cup last season, losing in the third round at home to Coventry City. United are going through a slightly difficult phase now. They lost to Liverpool away, and failed to break Villareal down at home in the Champions League. They will play Chelsea in the weekend, and Boro are no pushovers despite their recent league phase. In their last seven league visits to Old Trafford, Boro have lost only twice. United will have to do without the services of Michael Carrick, who broke a bone in his foot in the game against Liverpool.

Middlesbrough also bid adieu to the League Cup in the third round last season, losing to champions Tottenham Hotspur. They come into this game, having thrashed Yeovil Town 5-1 in the second round. In that game, as many as five Boro players got their name on the scoresheet- Mido, Digard, Aliadiere, Emnes and Johnson. Sanli Tuncay’s absence will be a minor issue for Boro, but Southgate would have been greatly impressed by the way Mido and Afonso Alves have combined together upfront. The duo, along with left winger Stewart Downing, are the main attacking threats for Boro.
