The defending champions are slowly returning to their devastating best and secured a comfortable 3-1 win over title rivals Arsenal last weekend. Chelsea’s dropped points against Hull City on Tuesday means that United are just two points behind the league leaders and manager Alex Ferguson will be confident that his side can remain within touching distance of the league leaders before the two teams meet in April.

United will be without Rio Ferdinand with the defender serving the first of his four match suspension while Nemanja Vidic continues to remain out of action with a calf injury.

Meanwhile Portsmouth coach Avram Grant will be hopeful that his side will come away from Old Trafford with minimal damage as he attempts to help his side give their best shot in avoiding relegation. Grant will be relieved following the end of the transfer window on Monday with Pompey having been forced to sell two of their best players as financial problems continue to persist. Asmir Begovic and Younes Kaboul left the club while Owusu-Abeyie Quincy was the only player to arrive at Fratton Park. Pompey had suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to United back in November and the defending champions are expected to improve on that result at Old Trafford this weekend.
