City showed great character to come back thrice in the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon, but Michael Owen snatched a dramatic winner in the sixth minute of injury time to give United a 4-3 win. Craig Bellamy was City’s standout player against United, scoring two wonderful solo goals.
City were without the suspended Emmanuel Adebayor and injured Robinho against United. Adebayor is also suspended for this clash. Shaun Wright Phillips and Carlos Tevez were on target when City beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in the second round. Fulham put in a lacklustre display as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Wolves at Molineux. The Cottagers were poor for most of the first half, and only began to wake up when Wolves went 2-0 ahead through Dave Edwards. Danny Murphy scored Fulham’s only goal of the game from the spot after Michael Mancienne had fouled Bobby Zamora.
Last season, Fulham were beaten at this stage of the competition by eventual semi finalists Burnley. Roy Hodgson’s side host Arsenal in the league on Saturday, followed by a Europa League game against Basel.
Both City and Fulham made early exits in this competition last season, and will be keen to progress. Sparky would have given his players a dressing down for their defensive errors against United.
