City went out of the Carling Cup on Wednesday night after playing a thriller at Old Trafford. They lost 4-3 on aggregate and 3-1 on the night. Goals from Paul Scholes and Micheal Carrick had given United a 2-0 lead by the 71st minute, but Carlos Tevez pulled one back in the 76th minute. However a last gasp header from Wayne Rooney handed the tie to United.

City boss Roberto Mancini will not want to take the focus away from a top four finish and will urge his side forward.

Meanwhile Pompey rescued a point at Fratton Park against West Ham United when Danny Webber scored in the 76th minute to nullify a strike from Mathew Upson for the Hammers.

Pompey are still five points away from safety, but the club can make moves in the transfer market after the FA lifted a transfer embargo on the club during the midweek. Media rumors also indicate the club may change hands yet again with the son of Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi, Saadi Gaddafi linked to buying out the current owners.

Earlier in the season, City had secured a 1-0 win over Pompey with Adebayor scoring the lone goal.
