Mark Hughes’ Manchester City will look to end a two game losing streak when Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia visit the City of Manchester Stadium for the second leg of their first round UEFA Cup tie. A brace from Brazilian Jo gave City a 2-1 win in Cyprus, so Omonia have to put in an exceptional performance at Eastlands on Thursday.

 

 

City thrashed Portsmouth 6-0 after beating Omonia Nicosia in the first leg, but the euphoria soon died down as they were knocked out of the Carling Cup by League One side Brighton and Hove Albion on penalties. Goals from Amr Zaki and Luis Valencia gave Wigan a 2-1 win over City at the JJB on Sunday, although the penalty that the Egyptian converted was something that should never have been given in the first place. Mark Hughes has a fair bit of thinking to do, although he is not expected to make any major changes to the side that played against Wigan.

Nothing short of a win at Eastlands will do for Omonia, and they need to score at least two goals. They have managed to score two in their recent league games. They led 2-0 against Apollon Limassol before violence forced the game to be abandoned. A brace from Okkas saw Omonia beat Atromitos Yeroskipou by two goals at home on Sunday. APOEL and Anorthosis Famagusta await Omonia after the midweek UEFA tie. The likes of Klodian Duro, Okkas and Bangura are all important players for Omonia as they travel to England. Shaun Wright Philips caused Omonia all sorts of problems with his pace in the first leg, and the Cypriot side would have taken note of that fact.
