Manchester City take on Portsmouth in their most crucial game of the season with any other result except a victory seeing them drop out of the race for the European spot for the next season.

Just eight points in their last eight matches has seen City slip down to eighth position in the league table. Sven Goran Eriksson's side are five points behind Portsmouth in the race for the sixth place. With Aston Villa expected to beat Birmingham City, anything but a victory against Portsmouth would put an end to City's fading European hopes with just four matches remaining in the season.

Manchester City registered only their second win in last eight matches with 2-1 victory over Sunderland last weekend. Elano put Manchester City in the lead after they were awarded a controversial penalty in the 79th minute. However Sunderland hit back immediately to equalize three minutes later before Darius Vassell grabbed the winner with three minutes remaining.

Meanwhile Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp will be hoping that his side will manage to improve on its finishing in the game against Manchester City. Pompey created a number of good chances against Newcastle United last weekend but were unable to put them away and in fact could have lost the match had the Newcastle strikers been clinical in front of the goal.

With Everton playing Chelsea on Thursday, Redknapp will be keen to take advantage of any slip ups and close the gap between themselves and Everton who are just four points ahead in fifth place.
