After beating EB Streymur 4-0 on aggregate in the first round, Mark Hughes’ Manchester City face Danish side FC Midtjylland in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.

 

 

August has been a good month for City, with a victory over AC Milan in the Thomas Cook Trophy following draws against Stockport and Celtic in pre season friendlies. City qualified for Europe via the Fair Play rule, and they certainly do have the players to go further in this competition. Mark Hughes rested Martin Petrov and Richard Dunne in the game against Milan to keep them fresh for the continental tie. Petrov has settled City’s left wing issues, while Dunne, their skipper, is a rock in defence. Vedrann Corluka has decided to stay at CoMs after rejecting a move to Spurs. Hughes can also count on the immensely talented Elano and Michael Johnson to control the game in the centre. Jo is at the Olympics, but City do have Vassell, Bojinov and co. available.

Midtjylland thrashed Welsh side Bangor City 10-1 in the first qualifying round. They beat them 4-0 and 6-1, but City, with their financial clout, will be tougher opposition. And add to that the fact that the first leg is not in Denmark, but England. Last year they beat Keflavik and Haka in the first two qualifying rounds before losing to Lokomotiv Moscow. They come into this game after thrashing OB 4-0 in the Danish league, with Nigerian Babajide Collins grabbing a hat trick, and the fourth coming from Kim Christensen. They have been unbeaten in the league so far, and face FC Copenhagen on the 17^th.

 

 

It wouldn’t be fair to write off Midtjylland, but on paper, Manchester City have the talent to end any hopes the Danish side may harbour in the first leg itself. City should win this, probably a goal or two. You can watch Manchester City vs Midtjylland live online through Live Sport Network.
