City drew 1-1 with Hull City in their weekend Premier League game. Winger Shaun Wright Phillips gave them the lead in the first half, but Hull substitute Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink earned a penalty after being fouled by City skipper Kolo Toure late in the game. Tigers midfielder Jimmy Bullard duly converted the resulting spotkick.
City crushed Scunthorpe United in the fourth round. Mark Hughes’ side took the lead in the third minute through Stephen Ireland, but Jonathan Forte equalised for Scunthorpe in the 26th minute. Roque Santa Cruz headed home Pablo Zabaleta’s cross to put City ahead twelve minutes later. Joleon Lescott ended the game as a contest with his 56th minute goal, but there was still time for two more as Carlos Tevez and Michael Johnson wrote their names on the scoresheet.
Arsenal’s youngsters were up against Liverpool in the fourth round, but they proved to be too strong for the Reds by winning an enthralling game 2-1. Spanish youngster Fran Merida’s sensational strike gave the Gunners the lead, but Liverpool responded with an equally wonderful strike from Emiliano Insua. Nicklas Bendtner however settled the issue five minutes into the second half, firing his shoot into the roof of Diego Cavalieri’s goal.
Arsenal however lost their weekend Premier League game to London rivals Chelsea. Didier Drogba’s second half opener, coupled with Thomas Vermaelen’s own goal saw the Blues go 2-0 ahead, and they sealed victory when Drogba fired home an unstoppable free kick to allow Carlo Ancelotti’s men to go eleven points clear of Arsenal.
